Release from Slavery
Olaudah Equiano was forced into slavery when he was only eleven years old. He was passed around between slavetraders until he was bought by Lieutenant Michael Pascal. After working for Pascal, Equiano was then sold to Captain James Doran where he was then transported to Montserrat. He was then sold again to Robert King, a merchant from Philadelphia.
Around nine years after his enslavement, when Equiano was about twenty years old, King has promised him that he could buy his freedom for forty pounds. Equiano worked hard to gain money of his own- trading for himself whenever he had the chance to. In around 1766, he finally bought his freedom. King encouraged Equiano to work with him as a business partner. However, Equiano found it dangerous to continue working as a freedman in the British colonies as he was almost kidnapped back into slavery while loading a ship in Georgia.
Equiano’s release from slavery is a significant event in his life as it allowed him to become a free man. This allowed him to write and publish his book- “The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, Or Gustavus Vassa, The African.” It was written about his experiences and was the first influential slave autobiography. Equiano’s freedom also allowed him to be involved in the abolitionist movement.
Overall, Equiano’s release has impacted on other slaves, giving them hope that they can be free one day. It has also allowed him to make a mark in history, fighting for the rights of his race.
